Harlinsdale April Rain Statistics

April temperatures were variable. We finally got some of those springtime temperatures we should have had in March. April was again a dry month.

This is the 3 month trend for temperatures at the Rock Hill Airport.

This is the 3 month average showing our rainfall being considerably below normal for the past quarter.

This is the 12 month average, which doesn't show as big a deficit as the 3 month trend.

This is the monthly trend,  showing February, March, and April to be the driest since before 2009.

This is the year to date trend, showing this year to be much lower than the previous 3 years.

March was Warm and Dry

Continuing our season of little winter, March was very warm - possibly breaking the record of most days in the month with high's above 80. March was also one of the driest in recent history, which could cause trouble because April is traditionally the driest month of the year. In this area, April showers do not bring May flowers.

The red line is the normal high and the blue line is the normal low. As you can see, for a large part of the month, our average daily temperature was at or above the normal high.

Rainfall for the second consecutive month was the lowest since 2008

The year to date rainfall is much lower than normal

Looking at trends shows the running 3 month total is much lower than normal as well.

The 12 month running total however, isn't anywhere as bad as it was in February of last year.

February Was Warm and Dry

As you can see, February had many days with temperatures above the normal high.

February rainfall was well below normal for the month. The lowest in the past 4 years.

Year to date rainfall is also the lowest in the past 4 years.

Where Did Winter Go?

Not that anyone is complaining - Temperatures were above normal while rainfall, although more than recent history, was below normal. There were 8 days of measurable rain compared to 6 days in 2011 and 5 in both 2010 and 2009.

2011 Harlinsdale Rainfall is now History

As you can see, temperatures continued above normal for December.

Rainfall for December was below normal but higher than in 2010.

The year finished out with normal rainfall. There were 94 days with measurable rainfall, compared to 75 in 2010 and 95 in 2009.

As far as the latest, their was a trace of snow on April 28, 1928. The latest accumulation was .8 inches on April 20, 1904.

What's the strongest wind ever recorded in Charlotte?
The strongest or fastest wind speed in Charlotte would be attributed to Hurricane Hugo on Sept. 22, 1989. A gust of 99 miles per hour and sustained winds of 69 miles per hour were recorded at the Charlotte-Douglas International Airport. Per the criteria of what qualifies as a hurricane, Hugo sustained hurricane-strength winds until shortly after it passed west of Charlotte.
